SEE & DO

THINGS TO DO

Anchor 1

Town Centre

St Remy de Provence is a pretty little town with a well-preserved old centre of narrow winding streets and charming shops, restaurants and cafes, plus a couple of museums and private art galleries.

Walking

The house is on the edge of town looking up to the Alpilles hills, where lovely walks can be had. Very nearby is Lac du Peiroou which is a very pretty small artificial lake with great views, popular for angling and picnicking.

Wineries

Just round the corner from Maison Glanum is the new winery of Domaine de Metifiot where there are tours and wine tasting. A few miles away is Chateau Romanin, an estate that uses the biodynamic method, which also has tours and tastings.

Cultural sites

The house is right next to St Remy’s three main tourist attractions: St Paul de Mausole, the sanatorium where Van Gogh spent a year; two well preserved Roman monuments (Les Antiques); and Glanum, the remains of the old roman town that was founded here. The town is also the birthplace of Nostradamus.

Markets

St Remy has a great market on Wednesday mornings, which gets extremely busy in Summer. Half an hour’s drive away is L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, well known for its antiques shops and weekend markets.

Local area

A short hop away is Les Baux, - a remarkable mediaval hilltop fortress and village with an amazing history. In the caves there is the Carrieres de Lumieres show – artworks projected on the walls and animated, which is well worth a visit.
